Used Car Inspection Checklist: What to Check Before You Buy

Ask to see the vehicle from cold where possible. A warm engine can hide starting behaviour, smoke or noises that only occur during the first few minutes. Check that the registration, vehicle identification details and service records are consistent with the seller?s description.

Walk around the vehicle in good light. Look for uneven panel gaps, colour differences, damaged tyres and signs of fluid beneath the car. Tyres should have legal tread and should wear evenly; unusual wear can point towards alignment, suspension or pressure concerns.

Inside, confirm that warning lights illuminate during the initial ignition check and then behave as expected after starting. Test the windows, locks, lights, heating, air conditioning and other equipment rather than assuming every feature works.

During a safe test drive, pay attention to starting, idle quality, clutch or automatic transmission behaviour, steering, braking and suspension noise. The vehicle should track consistently and stop without unexpected vibration or pulling.

An electronic scan can add useful information about stored faults and system communication, but it should sit alongside the physical inspection and road-test observations. A clear scan cannot guarantee that a used vehicle will never develop a fault.

If access is restricted, the seller will not allow a meaningful inspection, or important documents are missing, treat that limitation as part of the buying decision. A professional pre-purchase inspection reduces uncertainty but does not replace appropriate history and identity checks.
